Lady Owls' late drought downs them in AMC semifinal loss to Lyon

The William Woods Lady Owls' offensive futility in the second half resulted an earlier-than-desired exit from the American Midwest Conference tournament.

The No. 3 seeded Lady Owls went the final 7 minutes, 11 seconds without a basket in tumbling to the No. 2 Lyon Lady Scots 65-46 in semifinal play on Saturday night.

William Woods (23-8) bowed to the Lady Scots in both meetings this season, most recently a 71-62 outcome on Feb. 5 in Batesville, Ark.

The Lady Owls - down by as many as 10 points in the first half - trimmed the deficit via a run to close the first half.

William Woods outscored Lyon 11-5 in the final 3:50 of the first half to go into intermission down 31-27.

Sophomore center Kennedy Volkart's three-point play with 13:39 remaining gave the Lady Owls a brief 39-37 edge. The Lady Scots reclaimed the lead on Jamie Jackson's basket with 11:02 left, then pushed their advantage out to 52-44 with 7:26 remaining.

A field goal by Volkart brought William Woods to within 52-46, but Lyon countered with a 13-0 run to close the contest.

Volkart tallied 15 points and eight rebounds as the Lady Owls' lone double-digit scorer. French added nine points as the Lady Owls shot 37 percent (18-of-49) from the field.

Taylor Gaedtke led all scorers with 18 points as one of four Lady Scots in double figures. Carina Jackson posted 16 points, while Jamie Jackson finished with 13 and Ashala Wallace added 10.

The Lady Scots (27-5) closed out the game shooting 46 percent (24-of-52) from the floor. Elliot Taylor matched Volkart's eight rebounds, vaulting Lyon to a 38-25 advantage on the glass.

The Lady Scots tussled with top-seeded, No. 1-ranked Freed-Hardeman for the AMC tournament title on Monday night.

William Woods earned an automatic bid to the NAIA Tournament as the event's host school. The Lady Owls will await their first-round pairing as game's will begin on Wednesday, March 18 in Independence.
