Tornado reportedly touches down briefly near New Bloomfield

A tornado touched down briefly 3 miles north-northeast of New Bloomfield Sunday at 5:47 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in St. Louis. A funnel cloud was first spotted at about 5:40 p.m. just west of Highway 54.

The tornado produced minor damage - whirling winds scattered debris in the air and bent trees along the highway.

There have been no confirmed injuries or confirmed reports of structural damage.

New Bloomfield Mayor Mike Lowe said he drove by city hall Monday morning and did not see any damage. He also checked on the construction area for the new Dollar General store.

"I was worried about any damage to their equipment but there was nothing there, either," Lowe said. "We definitely came unscathed."

As of Monday afternoon, Lowe said he was surprised that no one had reported anything to him regarding the tornado.
