Swine showing champions emerge at Callaway Youth Expo

The largest crowd July 9 at the Callaway Youth Expo in Auxvasse gathered for the 7p.m. swine show, which featured a breeding gilt show, a market hog show and a swine showmanship competition.

The breeding gilt show was broken down into two main categories: "purebreds gilts" and "crossbreds." Purebred gilts contestants showed swine according to three separate classes: class two consisted of one competing purebred December gilt, class two included four competing purebred January gilts, while class 3 had one purebred February gilt being showed.

The champion purebred gilt was Pacey Cope showing a Hampshire born in December, and the class two winner and reserve champion from the purebred gilt competition was Tayler Cope, who showed a Yorkshire born in January.

Crossbreds contestants showed swine in one of two classes based on their competing swine's weight. Class four had crossbreds that weighed between 68 and 211 pounds, while class five featured crossbreds that weighed between 237 and 253 pounds. Emily Montgomery showed two swine in class four and emerged as the class four winner and class four runner-up, as well as the crossbred gilt champion. Bryana Binkley took first place in class five and was the crossbred reserve champion.

Both the overall champion and the reserve champion of the breeding gilt show came from the crossbred gilt winners. Emily Montgomery claimed overall gilt champion with a 211-pound crossbred, and Bryana Binkley took overall reserve gilt champion with a 243-pound crossbred.

The market hog show competition was divided into six classes according to swine weight. Class one competitors included two gilts and six barrows, weighing between 139 and 208 pounds. Emily Montgomery took first place of class one with a 202-pound barrow and was also class one's runner-up with a 139-pound barrow.

Class two had stiff competition with nine swine being showed - two gilts and seven barrows - that weighed between 211 and 220 pounds. Tayler Cope took first place with a 218-pound barrow.

Class three included seven swine - two gilts and five barrows - that weighed between 221 and 234 pounds. Alyssa Reid claimed first place with a 225-pound barrow.

Seven swine were showed in class four - six barrows and one sex left undetermined according to official results from the Youth Expo. MaKenna Allen nabbed first place with a 243-pound barrow.

Class five also had stiff competition with nine barrows being showed - they all weighed between 253 and 258 pounds. Courtney Kemp won class five with a 253-pound barrow.

And lastly, class featured seven wine being showed - six barrows and one sex undetermined according to official results obtained from expo. Courtney Kemp also won class six with a 273-pound barrow. She was also the market champion with the class six winning barrow. The title of reserve market champion went to MaKenna Allen with her class four winning barrow.

The swine showmanship competition was based on how each contestant showed their swine - poise and control of swine were important factors in determining showmanship winners. Participants competed in three separate categories according to age.

Six children competed in the junior group (ages 8-11). Pacey Cope displayed the best showmanship in this age group.

Six adolescents showcased their showmanship in the intermediate group (ages 12-15), with Tayler Cope taking first.

And finally, seven teenagers competed in the senior group (16+), with Emily Montgomery claiming showmanship bragging rights.
