Ordinance prepares New Bloomfield for Dollar General

The New Bloomfield Board of Alderman passed an ordinance to retain a portion of an existing sewer line at its regular meeting Thursday.

The sewer line is currently beneath the lot designated for the construction of the Dollar General and will be deemed useless once the new building is in place, City Superintendent Mike Rieken said. Once it is complete the Dollar General will stand at the intersection of Old U.S. 54 and State Route J across the street from the Bank Star One.

The store will carry items which residents are unable to obtain without leaving New Bloomfield including essential household items, frozen foods, canned-food items and staple items like milk, cheese and eggs, the Fulton Sun previously reported. However, it will not carry fresh produce or fresh meat items.

The building permit was approved April 1 and the foundation has been poured, but rain has temporarily halted further progression, Rieken said.

Also at the regular meeting, Karrie Sandfort of New Bloomfield requested that the Board of Alderman consider her contribution to the New Bloomfield Park. Sandfort's son, Spc. Charles McClure was killed May 2 while serving in the Army in Kuwait, the Fulton Sun previously reported. McClure's family is being presented with a statue in honor of his service. Sandfort hopes the statue will be ready by the end of September and to have a ribbon cutting ceremony if the board approves of the addition to the park.

The board agreed to look into her request.
