WWU's Smith, Zink earn bids to NAIA national meet

Owls senior Nick Zink and junior Alex Smith both qualified for the NAIA indoor championships with their respective performances Friday.

Zink - William Woods University's lone competitor at the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence, Kansas - clocked a fifth-place time of 1 minute, 13.74 seconds in the men's 600-yard run to finish just inside the NAIA "B' standard.

Smith notched his first-ever national bid with a second-place showing in the weight throw at the Principia College Relays in Elsah, Illinois. Smith recorded a personal-best toss of 16.64 meters, easily surpassing the "B' standard.

Freshman Joseph Mueller (12.24 meters) and junior Preston Wolfe (10.71 meters) finished third and fifth, respectively, in the men's triple jump for the Owls.

Mueller, Wolfe and juniors Gabriel Dos Santos and Martell Washington clocked a fourth-place time of 1:35.12 in the 800-meter relay. Cook teamed with junior Tyler Jones, sophomore Timothy Ward and freshman Phillip Kuplinski to earn fifth in the 3,200 relay in 8:38.55.

The William Woods women's lone first-place showing at Principia came from their 3,200 relay unit. The quartet of redshirt senior Alex Apperson, juniors Petra Bethea and Samantha Brolaski and sophomore Hannah Brolaski won with a time of 10:11.57.

Bethea and Corbin joined freshmen Hannah Rutherford and Megan Wilson on the Lady Owls' 1,600 sprint medley relay that came in second in 4:34.55.

Senior Lee Anna Sanders took third place in the 3,000 with a personal-best time of 10:48.9. Freshmen Grace Young (11:14.6) and Jami Brandow (11:15.5) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the event.

Freshman Alliah McClendon set a personal record with her fifth-place time of :09.57 in the 60 hurdles.

William Woods competes in the Jim Green Invitational at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, in Jacksonville, Illinois.
