South Callaway boys advance to Sturgeon Tournament title game

The No. 2 seed Bulldogs moved on to a much-anticipated showdown in the championship after fending off the No. 3 Trojans 73-61 in Thursday night's semifinals.

South Callaway (16-1) advanced to face unbeaten and top-seeded Salisbury (18-0) - ranked No. 3 in Class 2 - in the title game late Saturday afternoon. Results were not available at press time. The Panthers reached the finals by downing No. 5 seed New Franklin 54-41 in Thursday night's other semifinal.

Saturday's game was a rematch of last year's championship, which South Callaway captured with a 62-57 win over Salisbury.

The Bulldogs owned a 35-21 lead over Community - ranked No. 5 in Class 1 - at halftime Thursday night. The Trojans, though, closed the gap to 50-43 by outscoring South Callaway 22-15 in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs countered by outscoring Community 23-18 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Senior guard Cory Hanger connected for 18 points to lead three players in double figures for South Callaway. Senior guards Troy Hentges and Dax Helsel also supplied 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Senior forward Jacob Smith pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and Hentges had eight, while Helsel distributed five assists and Hanger and Smith both recorded four.

Conner Brooks tallied a game-high 19 points for the Trojans, while Clay Thebeau added 17 and Lane Thebeau contributed 13.
