William Woods women extend win streak to seven games

The Lady Owls registered a 42-31 scoring advantage in the second half of their 75-66 AMC victory over the Lady Trojans on Thursday night.

With the triumph, William Woods University (15-5, 11-4 American Midwest Conference) equaled its season-high win streak of seven games. The Lady Owls won both regular-season meetings with Hannibal-LaGrange University.

Trailing 35-33 at halftime, the Lady Owls opened the second half on an 8-2 run to grab a four-point edge with 16 minutes, 11 seconds remaining.

Junior forward Nia Lateju's jumper with 13:15 left pushed William Woods' advantage to 47-41. The Lady Trojans (7-12, 7-8 AMC) trailed 60-54 with 5:52 left, but scored five points in just :56 to cut its deficit to a point with 4:56 to go.

Hannibal-LaGrange trimmed the Lady Owls' lead to a point again when Sarah Cline's layup with 2:50 remaining made it 64-63. William Woods ended the game on a 9-3 run to secure the victory.

Lateju tallied 19 points to pace four players in double figures for the Lady Owls, who shot 42 percent (26-of-62) from the field. Sophomore center Kennedy Volkart finished with 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while senior forward Blake French totaled 15 points.

Senior guard Destani Stensrud added 12 points off the bench.

Morgan Winkler produced a game-high 22 points for Hannibal-LaGrange. Ashleigh Hurd-Spencer scored 14 points and collected a game-high 14 rebounds, while Juliana Lopes Roberto contributed 10 points.

The Lady Trojans shot 41 percent (26-of-63) as a team and outrebounded William Woods 35-29.

William Woods returns home for an AMC contest against Williams Baptist (Arkansas) College at 2 p.m. Saturday at Anderson Arena. The Lady Owls downed the Lady Eagles 64-51 on Dec. 6 in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas.
