Westminster, William Woods University host events open to public

William Woods University and Westminster College both have events this week and next that are free and open to the public.

WWU to announce winners of Emerging Talent High School Art Show

This week marks the last that the Emerging Talent High School Art Show will be on display.

The high school students' art work can be viewed in the Mildred M. Cox Art Gallery through Thursday. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.

According to a William Woods press release, for the art exhibit - titled "Missouri and I" - the school encouraged all Mid-Missouri high school students to submit their artwork. This the the fourth year the university has hosted a high school art competition, according to the release.

Winners will be announced at a reception on Thursday. The reception will be from 4-6 p.m. in the Gladys Woods Kemper Center for the Arts.

Westminster to host Chicago Boyz Acrobatic Team

On Friday, Westminster will host Chicago Boyz Acrobatic Team, the "America's Got Talent" acrobatic group. The group was a semifinalist on the TV program, according to a press release. They will perform at 7 p.m. Friday in Champ Auditorium on Westminster's campus.

Chicago Boyz is a team of professional gymnasts. Their performance will include acrobatic stunts as well as tricks inside of jump ropes, catapulting from mini trampolines and tumbling routines, according to the press release.

The release also stated that the acrobatic team has performed at NBA and college halftime shows, professional circuses, festivals and schools nationwide.

The college's campus activities board is sponsoring the event.

WWU to display work of photographer Sarah Carmody

Starting next week, William Woods will display the work of photographer Sarah Carmody. Carmody has spent more than 25 years as a photographer, according to a press release.

She has worked as a professional portrait and wedding photographer as well as a newspaper and magazine photographer.

The release stated that Carmody captures her images using a technique called high dynamic range (HDR), which produces "the perception of exaggerated detail and tonal range."

The release further stated that "HDR is achieved by shooting the same image at various exposures, combining them and then selectively enhancing and de-emphasizing elements as desired."

The St. Louis photographer's work will be on display in the Mildred M. Cox Gallery Feb. 5 to March 2. The university will host an opening reception from 4-6 p.m. on Feb. 5 in the Gladys Woods Kemper Center for the Arts.
