South Callaway girls outlast New Franklin in overtime to open Sturgeon Tourney

No. 3 seed South Callaway outscored No. 6 New Franklin 9-5 in overtime in a 47-43 clash between Lady Bulldogs in first-round play at the 31st-annual Sturgeon Tournament on Monday night.

South Callaway (11-5) will face No. 2 seed Community R-6 in the semifinals at 7:30 tonight. The Lady Trojans registered a 41-30 first-round win over No. 7 seed Sturgeon on Monday night.

South Callaway trailed 18-13 at halftime, but outscored New Franklin 13-10 in the third quarter to pull within 28-26. South Callaway then forced overtime by outscoring New Franklin 12-10 in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 38-all.

"... The defensive effort is what really pulled that game off," South Callaway head coach Darren Humphrey said. "We had a lot of people step up and come off the bench and give us a boost, give us fresh legs.

"We actually hit some really, really big shots at the end. It wasn't the best outing we've ever had, but it was one that got the job done for us."

Freshman point guard Adrian Mann logged a game-high 21 points for South Callaway. Sophomore guard Nicole Horstman added eight points, while sophomore forward Konnor Arrowood chipped in with six.

Aislinn Himmelberg and Madilynn Lyons tallied 12 points apiece to guide New Franklin.
