William Woods women top Stephens, win fifth straight

Junior guard Kendra Vernatti came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points in powering the Lady Owls to a 90-42 American Midwest Conference blitz of the Stars on Thursday night at Anderson Arena.

William Woods University (13-5, 9-4 AMC) notched its fifth straight win, while sweeping the season series with Stephens College. The Lady Owls manhandled the Stars 76-30 on Nov. 20 in Columbia.

Vernetti finished 8-of-15 from the field and connected on 4-of-9 3-point attempts Thursday night. William Woods distanced itself from Stephens with a 46-19 halftime lead. The Lady Owls were just as efficient in the second half, outscoring the Stars 44-23.

Junior forward Nia Lateju and senior guard Destani Stensrud also tallied 12 and nine points, respectively, for William Woods. Junior guard Julia Wells had six points and a game-high nine rebounds as the Lady Owls shot 47 percent (33-of-71) as a team and easily outrebounded Stephens 50-26.

Dana Hegemann scored nine points to pace the Lady Stars (2-16, 2-11). Stephens shot just 31 percent (15-of-48) from the field.

The Lady Owls' scheduled AMC game at Benedictine-Springfield (Illinois) on Saturday has been cancelled. The school announced Wednesday that the rest of the season has been cancelled.

William Woods, meanwhile, travels to Hannibal-LaGrange University for an AMC contest at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29. The Lady Owls toppled the Lady Trojans 72-55 on Dec. 4 in Fulton.
