No. 1 Hornets wrestlers 'a little off,' still topple rival Mexico

The top-ranked Fulton Hornets wrestling team overcame a ragged performance to stay perfect.

Fulton - ranked No. 1 in Class 2 by rankwrestlers.com - raised its season record to 20-0 and moved to 4-0 in the North Central Missouri Conference by rolling past rival Mexico 47-19 on Thursday night at Roger D. Davis Gymnasium.

"We got falls when we needed them and points when we should have, but as a group effort we were a little off," Hornets head coach Eric Hudson said. "If I were giving it a grade, it would be a C, and I think the kids would tell you that too.

"On Wednesday we had a fairly tough practice, and that might have had a little something to do with it. The kids were also a little excited about wrestling Mexico and they wanted to get a win."

Here are Thursday night's individual results, by weight class:

•106 pounds - Dylan Patton (M) won by 7-5 decision over freshman Tucker Caswell (F); 113 - sophomore Devan Hudson (F) won by 10-1 major decision over Tyler Wine (M); 120 - sophomore Brandon Dews (F) won by forfeit; 126 - freshman Jacob Kern (F) won by forfeit; 132 - Jadin Taylor (M) pinned senior Connor Dawson (F) in 2:48;

Fulton hosts its annual Jim Wallace Classic - named after the Hornets' longtime head coach - starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. The tournament field includes Moberly, Boonville, School of the Osage, Missouri Military Academy, Lutheran St. Charles, Priory, Winfield, Maplewood-Richmond Heights and (Kansas City) Center.

"It's a good chance to watch our kids wrestle multiple times against some new teams," Eric Hudson said. "We expect to compete well and win our home tournament."
