Blue Jays drop eighth straight SLIAC contest

ST. LOUIS - The Westminster College Blue Jays' season-long losing skid reached eight games after a 67-60 SLIAC setback to the Fontbonne University Griffins on Wednesday night.

Freshman guard Tanner Cochran scored a team-high 16 points for Westminster (2-14, 1-8 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

After trailing 30-22 at halftime, the Blue Jays started the second half on a 9-0 run to grab a one-point edge with 12 minutes, 37 seconds left.

Fontbonne, though, responded with a 19-6 run over the next 5:59, establishing a 49-37 advantage with 6:38 to go. Westminster trimmed its deficit to as few as six points over the duration of the contest.

Junior forward Matt Murphy logged 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Blue Jays, while senior guard Brandon Moore scored 11 points. Westminster shot just 36 percent (21-of-58) as a team.

Evan Johnson tallied a game-high 17 points for the Griffins (5-11, 4-5), who shot 40 percent (22-of-55) from the field. Jared Greenlee came off the bench to add 12 points, while Blake Welch contributed 10.

Ben Kissing collected a team-high seven rebounds to direct Fontbonne to a 40-36 edge on the boards.

Westminster goes back to St. Louis for a SLIAC contest against Webster University at 3 p.m. Saturday.
