Explosive device found in Millersburg roadway over weekend

Law enforcement: Not related to incident in Holts Summit Jan. 10

Officials say a pair of explosive devices found in a roadway near Millersburg Sunday do not appear to be connected to a bomb found in a mailbox in Holts Summit on Jan. 10.

The Callaway County Sheriff's office received a call at 4:14 p.m. on Sunday about two suspicious objects in the road at the intersection of county roads 351 and 352.

Lt. Clay Chism with the sheriff's office said deputies arrived on the scene at 4:24 p.m. and made a preliminary finding that the two objects "were, in fact, an explosive device, one of which had exploded."

Chism said the Millersburg Fire Protection District and the Missouri State Highway Patrol also responded to the scene, and the highway patrol's bomb squad did a controlled detonation of the second device.

Chism emphasized several times that because the explosive devices were in the roadway and not on anyone's private property that the incident appears to be a random act.

"The main thing is we don't believe anyone was directly targeted," he said.

Chism also said the explosives in Millersburg do not appear to be related to the incident in Holts Summit.

"Based on evidence found at the scene compared to evidence from Holts Summit, there does not appear to be a direct connection," he said.

Chism said deputies have some leads they are following up on and the investigation into the incident continues.
