Westminster women bow to Spalding

The host Lady Blue Jays' five-game winning streak was snapped in a 68-46 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to the Lady Eagles on Saturday.

Westminster College (7-5, 6-2 SLIAC) labored on offense, shooting a dreadful 29 percent (15-of-51) as a team.

Sophomore forward Andrea Zalis' 3-pointer with 11 minutes, 32 seconds left in the first half brought Westminster within 12-11, but that would be as close as the Lady Blue Jays would get.

Spalding (Kentucky) University broke the game open with a 23-4 run, extending its lead to 35-15 with 5:17 remaining in the half. The Lady Blue Jays trailed 44-27 at halftime.

Junior guard Sadie Theroff logged 11 points as the only player to make it into double figures for Westminster. Zalis finished with seven points and collected a team-high eight rebounds.

Kayla Styles' double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds guided Spalding (11-3, 9-0). Kallie Ash also logged 11 points and Jessica Guy contributed 10 as the Lady Eagles shot just 39 percent (24-of-61) from the field, but converted 62 percent (8-of-13) from 3-point range.

Spalding totalled 24 points off 16 Westminster turnovers. The Lady Eagles easily dominated the Lady Blue Jays on the boards by a decisive 53-28 margin.

Westminster travels to St. Louis for a SLIAC clash with Fontbonne University at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
