Lady Blue Jays coast to fifth win in a row

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - The Westminster College Lady Blue Jays logged their fifth straight victory as four players reached double figures in Wednesday night's 67-43 SLIAC triumph over the Iowa Wesleyan College Lady Tigers.

Westminster (7-4, 6-1 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) led by as many as 17 points in the first half, grabbing a 34-17 advantage at halftime. The Lady Blue Jays shot 52 percent in the first 20 minutes, while limiting Iowa Wesleyan to a feeble 26-percent effort.

Westminster pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 30 points.

The Lady Tigers (9-6, 6-2 SLIAC) trailed by as many as 30 points in the second half, finishing the game 28 percent (15-of-53) from the floor.

Sophomore forward Andrea Zalis - who made all seven of her free-throw attempts - guided the Lady Blue Jays with 15 points. Sophomore guard Payton Gruber came off the bench to provide 11 points, finishing 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from 3-point range.

Junior guard Sadie Theroff also contributed 11 points and junior point guard Kasey Gatson had 10 as Westminster shot 48 percent (25-of-52) for the game, including 50 percent (9-of-18) from behind the arc.

Junior point guard Mackenzie Haddox and sophomore forward Krista Armontrout collected eight rebounds apiece to help carry the Lady Blue Jays to a 29-23 edge on the boards.

Karla Vietinghoff countered with a game-high 18 points off the bench as the only player in double figures for Iowa Wesleyan (9-6, 6-2), which shot just 28 percent (15-of-53) overall.

The Lady Blue Jays host Spalding (Kentucky) University in SLIAC play at 1 p.m. Saturday.
