William Woods women notch AMC win at Park

Four Lady Owls scored in double figures as they outlasted the Lady Pirates 61-56 in American Midwest Conference play on Saturday.

William Woods (10-5, 6-4 AMC) overcame a 35 percent (19-of-55) shooting clip and 22 turnovers to win for just the second time in its last six games.

Sophomore center Kennedy Volkart paced the Lady Owls with 15 points. Junior guard Marissa Webb notched a double-double, scoring 13 points and leading all players with 10 rebounds.

Senior guard Blake French and junior forward Nia Lateju each finished with 10 points and five rebounds as the Lady Owls outgained Park on the glass 43-30.

William Woods led by as many as 11 points in the first half and took a 32-23 cushion into intermission. After a Volkart layup with 8 minutes, 56 seconds left gave the Lady Owls a 51-36 lead, Park went on an 18-7 run over the next 4:40 to trim its deficit to four points.

William Woods hit 3-for-6 free throws over the final 2:06 to wrap up the win. The Lady Owls were 20-of-31 from the line for the game.

Lauren LaBlonde was the only Lady Pirate in double figures with a game-high 18 points. Lauren Maclin supplied nine points, while Latice Butler scored six points and led Park with six rebounds.

The Lady Pirates (5-7, 4-5 AMC) shot 40 percent (19-of-48) from the floor and 3-of-8 from 3-point range.

William Woods returns home for an AMC clash with 23rd-ranked Columbia College at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
