William Woods sponsors art competition, show for high school students

William Woods University's art department is offering area high school students the opportunity to be showcased at the college's "Emerging Talent High School Show."

Students with a knack for art can submit their pieces - any media they wish - to William Woods starting Thursday. The last day to enter is Saturday.

The university has supported the Emerging Talent High School Show for three years, according to Gallery Coordinator Nicole Petrescu. She said her department has already been working with local high school teachers to garner interest and participation in the show.

It will be curated, and awards for best of show, first place, second place and third place will be given. Judges will assess overall quality, any unexpected elements and how the artist interprets the show's name: "Missouri and I."

"(They need to) express what connects them to the space and culture of Missouri," Petrescu said.

The best of show winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship to William Woods' art program.

The exhibit opens Monday, Jan. 12, but the awards ceremony will take place Friday, Jan. 30 during the closing reception. Because William Woods is on break, Petrescu scheduled the awards ceremony for a later date so her students could attend.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, contact Petrescu at (573) 592-4245.
