Zalis' jumper lifts Westminster women over Fontbonne

Andrea Zalis hit the go-ahead jumper with 44 seconds left to lift the Lady Blue Jays past the Lady Griffins 70-65 in their SLIAC home finale on Wednesday night.

Zalis - a sophomore forward - came off the bench to tally team highs of 14 points and seven rebounds for Westminster (17-6, 14-3 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

The Lady Blue Jays - winners of 10 of their last 11 games - erased their 39-31 halftime hole with a quick 10-0 run to grab the advantage. Neither team led by more than four points for the rest of the half as Fontbonne knotted the game at 65-all on Emily Haring's basket with :52 remaining.

Zalis' field goal gave Westminster a 67-65 edge. Junior guards Kasey Gatson and Mackenzie Haddox combined for three free throws in the final :19 to help the Lady Blue Jays secure the season sweep.

Gatson scored 11 points and Haddox finished with 10 as Westminster closed the game shooting 35 percent from the floor (23-of-65).

Haring logged a game-high 16 points for the Lady Griffins (9-14, 5-11 SLIAC). Chelsy Gibson contributed 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for Fontbonne, which shot 47 percent from the field (26-of-55).

The Lady Griffins finished with a 41-40 rebounding edge.

The Lady Blue Jays conclude the regular season with a SLIAC game at Spalding at noon on Saturday. Westminster fell to the Lady Golden Eagles 68-46 on Jan. 17 in Fulton.
