Cochran, Westminster men drop SLIAC home finale to Fontbonne

Despite freshman guard Tanner Cochran's game-high 20 points, the Blue Jays couldn't complete the rally in their 86-80 SLIAC loss to the Griffins in Wednesday's home finale.

Cochran connected on 5-of-11 field goals and all nine free throws for Westminster (5-18, 4-12 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

The Blue Jays trailed 43-26 at halftime and that deficit ballooned to 20 points on three occasions in the second half. Senior guard Brandon Moore's three free throws brought Westminster to within 81-74 with 1:50 to go, while a jumper by junior guard Aaron Jackson Jr. with 1:44 left cut the deficit to five, as low as it would get for the rest of the game.

Cochran had a team-high four rebounds, while Moore and junior forward Matt Murphy finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Blue Jays.

Westminster shot 46 percent (27-of-59) from the floor, but got outrebounded 25-15.

Richard Dorhauer scored 14 points to pace Fontbonne (9-13, 8-7 SLIAC). Jared Greenlee added 11 points, while Darius Rucker tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Griffins shot a blistering 59 percent (29-of-49) from the field.

The Blue Jays close their season with a SLIAC tilt at Spalding at 2 p.m. Saturday. Westminster bowed to the Golden Eagles 58-48 on Jan. 17 in Fulton.
