Ash Wednesday starts Lenten season

A young St. Peter Catholic School student receives ashes from Father Frank Bussmann inside the church on Ash Wednesday. The religious event kicks off the Lenten season, a six week period in preparation for Easter Sunday on April 5. Lent also serves as a time of repentance for Christians, and it's customary for them to give up something in reflection of Jesus' sacrifice of his life. "(Ashes are) a sign we want to repent," Bussmann said to the congregation gathered for 8:15 a.m. mass Wednesday. "They're a sign we want to turn our lives around."
