Fulton girls beat on boards in loss to Southern Boone

The Lady Hornets couldn't keep the Lady Eagles off the boards in Friday's 57-39 non-conference loss.

Fulton (12-9) - which fell to Southern Boone 50-41 in the first round of the Southern Boone Classic on Feb. 2 - was easily outrebounded 37-21 on Friday night, yielding 16 offensive rebounds to the Lady Eagles.

"Rebounding is effort and we just didn't get it; we didn't get it," Lady Hornets head coach TJ Quick said. "Their rebounds, some of them were wide open.

"That's a mental breakdown and the effort just wasn't there."

The game was tied at 3-all before Southern Boone finished the first quarter on a 15-6 run to open up an 18-9 lead.

The Lady Eagles stretched their advantage to 14 points in the second quarter, taking a 29-19 advantage into the break.

"We just couldn't make anything," Quick said. "(Shooting) 36 percent is not that bad, but we were missing wide-open layups and that just can't happen."

Fulton connected on only 14-of-39 shots, including just 1-of-5 from 3-point range. Junior guard Sloane Totta paced the Lady Hornets with 16 points and six rebounds. Junior forward NaShayla Brandt scored six points and junior guard Rachel Guse' added five.

Emma Anderson and Kylie Shoot logged 12 points apiece to pace four Southern Boone players in double figures. Katie Price finished with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while TrEl'Shawn Smith also scored 10.

The Lady Eagles shot 42 percent (22-of-53) from the floor.

Fulton's junior varsity team remained winless with a 37-11 loss. Sophomore guard Kenzie Archer scored five points to lead the Lady Hornets (0-12).

Fulton returns home for a North Central Missouri Conference matchup against the Kirksville Lady Tigers at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Lady Hornets edged past the Lady Tigers 59-55 on Dec. 19 in Kirksville.
