William Woods women fall to No. 1 Freed-Hardeman

Sophomore center Kennedy Volkart's perfect day from the field couldn't lift the Owls past the top-ranked Lady Lions 70-55 in AMC play on Saturday.

Volkart connected on 6-of-6 field goals, tallying a team-high 14 points for William Woods (16-7, 12-6 American Midwest Conference).

After trailing 33-23 at intermission, the Lady Owls were outgained 37-32 in the second half. William Woods has dropped two in a row after posting a season-high eight-game winning streak.

Junior forward Nia Lateju added 13 points and a team-leading six rebounds for the Lady Owls. William Woods shot 40 percent (21-of-52) from the field and was easily outrebounded 47-21.

Hayley Newby exploded for 35 points and 14 rebounds to spark Freed-Hardeman (23-1, 18-0 AMC). Grace Alonso de Armino tallied 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds as the Lady Tigers shot 44 percent (32-of-72) from the floor.

Freed-Hardeman swept the season series from the Lady Owls as they prevailed 91-58 on Dec. 16 in Fulton.

William Woods hosts AMC foe Lindenwood-Belleville at 2 p.m. next Saturday. The Lady Owls slipped on the road to the Lady Lynx 73-72 on Jan. 3.
