No. 19 Lady Owls split opening doubleheader

The No. 19 William Woods Lady Owls closed out their opening series with a wild 10-8 loss to the Oklahoma Wesleyan Lady Eagles on Saturday.

The Lady Owls grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Lady Eagles tied the game with single runs in their halves of the first and second inning. Oklahoma Wesleyan broke out with four runs in the third to push out to 6-2 advantage, but William Woods plated three runs in the fourth to close its gap to 6-5.

The Lady Eagles added three runs in the fifth to take a 9-5 edge, but the Lady Owls pushed two runs home in the sixth to get back to within 9-7.

Oklahoma Wesleyan finished its scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth, while William Woods concluded its scoring in the seventh.

Junior left fielder Sydnae Hatton finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Redshirt sophomore right fielder Brailee Schulte was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs as the Lady Owls racked up eight hits.

Freshman starter Bre Logan gave up three earned runs and three hits to take the loss. Logan threw 2 1/3 innings, struck out three and walked eight.

William Woods posted two runs in the top of the seventh to upend the Lady Eagles 8-6 in Saturday's opener.

Junior right fielder Emily Murphy was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and a pair of RBIs to spark the Lady Owls. Senior third baseman Caroline Sicht and senior catcher Macy Wierschem each went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run as William Woods produced nine hits.

Senior Julie Scheer threw 2 2/3 innings and struck out one to secure the win. Scheer three runs - two earned - on three hits, while walking four.

The Lady Owls play a doubleheader at McKendree (Illinois) University beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17.
