William Woods women fall to No. 18 Lyon

The Lady Owls' season-long eight-game winning streak was snapped in a 71-62 AMC loss to the No. 18 Lady Scots on Thursday night.

William Woods University (16-6, 12-5 American Midwest Conference) shot just 28 percent in the first half, but only trailed 28-26 at the break.

Junior forward Nia Lateju's 3-pointer on the Lady Owls' opening possession of the second half vaulted them to a one-point edge with 19 minutes, 21 seconds remaining. The contest was tied four times over the ensuing 5:03, but a layup by Taylor Gaedtke gave Lyon College the lead for good at 39-37 with 14:18 to go.

The Lady Scots stretched their advantage to as many as nine points as they secured the season sweep of William Woods.

Senior guard Destani Stensrud paced the Lady Owls with 18 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore center Kennedy Volkart scored 12 points as William Woods bounced back from its cold start to shoot 41 percent (19-of-46) for the game.

The Lady Owls outrebounded Lyons 33-26.

Gaedtke logged 18 points to guide five players in double figures for the Lady Scots (19-4, 15-2). Carina Jackson tallied 15 points and Jamie Jackson totaled 11, while Ashala Watson and Elliot Taylor scored 10 apiece.

Lyon shot 47 percent (25-of-53) as a team.

The Lady Owls stay on the road for an AMC tilt at No. 1 Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Lady Tigers manhandled William Woods 91-58 on Dec. 16 in Fulton.
