Fulton girls use big fourth quarter to topple Harrisburg

The No. 2 seed Lady Hornets outscored the No. 3 Lady Bulldogs 23-15 in the fourth quarter of a 68-61 consolation-semifinal victory at the Southern Boone Classic on Thursday.

Fulton (11-7) will play No. 8 seed Linn or No. 4 Father Tolton for fifth place at noon Saturday.

The Lady Hornets led 31-29 at halftime Thursday, but were outscored 17-14 in the third quarter and trailed 46-45 entering the final 8 minutes.

Fulton - which trailed by as many as five points in the fourth quarter - tied the game at 52-all on a basket by junior guard Rachel Guse' with 3 minutes left. Junior guard Sloane Totta's 3-pointer on Fulton's next possession put the Lady Hornets in front to stay, triggering a game-ending 16-9 run.

Fulton head coach TJ Quick took her team out of its usual zone defense and opted to run a man-to-man scheme. The move forced Harrisburg to attack from the paint rather than the 3-point line.

"We had to pick our poison and the girls responded well," Quick said. "We got key stops, big buckets and hit our free throws."

Junior forward NaShayla Brandt led the Lady Hornets with 25 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

"NaShayla is driving, shooting and is now a point guard and handing out assists," Quick said. "NaShayla did that for us tonight; those 10 rebounds are just her being NaShayla, which she does really well. "

Totta added 20 points as Fulton shot 50 percent (25-of-50) from the field. The Lady Hornets outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs 36-26.

Bailey Ivicsics supplied game highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds for Harrisburg. Kirsten Sutherland logged 15 points, while Bailey Lowery chipped in with 11.
