Patrol investigates Callaway County shooting incident

The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances of an incident in which a Callaway County Sheriff's deputy shot a suspect overnight.

Lt. Clay Chism with the Callaway County Sheriff's Department said deputies responded shortly before 10:30 p.m. Saturday to a report of a disturbance involving a man with a firearm at a private business property in the 1800 block of Missouri 94 in southern Callaway County, just outside Jefferson City limits.

While deputies were traveling to the location, a dispatcher radioed that shots reportedly had been fired at the scene. That prompted additional officers from the patrol and Jefferson City Police Department to be called to respond.

After officers arrived at the scene, the suspect approached them with a gun in a threatening manner, Chism alleged. That's when a sheriff's deputy shot the suspect. The man was taken by ambulance to an area hospital where he's in serious condition.

The deputy, whose name is not being released, was placed on administrative leave, pending results of an investigation by the patrol. Chism identified the deputy only as a "veteran" and shift supervisor in the department.
