Monday night shooting sends victim to hospital

FPD asks for public's help in locating suspect

One person was transported to a Columbia hospital after being assaulted with a gun in Fulton early Monday evening, Fulton police said.

Officers responded to the shooting at 728 Grand Street at 5:07 p.m. According to a police statement, the shooting prompted Fulton Middle School, Bush Elementary School, the YMCA of Callaway County and the Missouri School for the Deaf to temporarily be placed on lockdown.

Law enforcement officials said they are pursuing leads, as the investigation is ongoing. Police did not release the victim's name, but said he is male.

Police were still searching for the suspect responsible into Monday night, but had not released any further information as the Fulton Sun was preparing for press.

Police advise anyone with any information to contact the Fulton Police Department at (573) 592-3100 or submit an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at (573) 592-2474.

Story updated at 4:16 p.m. Dec. 1: According to the latest information released by Fulton police, they suspect 23-year-old Fulton resident Ladeigh Cowans to be the shooter. Police consider Cowans to be armed and dangerous, and ask anyone with information on Cowans' whereabouts to contact FPD or Crime Stoppers.

FPD also released the name of the male victim that suffered multiple gunshot injuries: 33-year-old Fulton resident Markus Berry. Police said Berry is still receiving treatment in a local hospital and is in stable condition.
