Fulton cross country teams sweep opening Callaway meet

The Fulton Hornets and Lady Hornets cross country teams both collected first-place finishes in Tuesday's season-opening Callaway County meet at the high school sports complex.

The meet was originally scheduled for last Saturday, but was rained out.

Sophomore Mason Gaines posted a time of 11 minutes, 36.7 seconds to take first place individually on the boys' side as Fulton accumulated 24 points. Meanwhile, senior Rachel Quick came in second in 15:50.3 to help the Fulton girls also pick up 24 points.

New Bloomfield - directed by senior Charlie Schattgen's second-place outcome (12:08.8) - was second in the boys' division with 32 points. North Callaway, led by sophomore Skyler Barker's 23rd-place finish (15:11.50), was a distant third with 85 points.

South Callaway did not field a complete team.

The South Callaway girls, with sophomore Adrian Mann capturing the individual title in 14:46.7, followed Fulton in second place with 33 points. North Callaway and New Bloomfield did not have full teams.

The Fulton boys were responsible for half of the top-10 finishers. Sophomores Gabe Leubbert (12:16.8) and Nathan Quick (12:28.3) also placed third and fourth, respectively, while sophomore Haydon Windsor came in seventh (12:42.2) and senior Luke Lohmeyer (13:10.4) was 10th.

New Bloomfield had three other runners in the top 10, with sophomores Kyle Emerson (12:39.7) and Payton Culwell (12:41.3) finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. Junior Zain Culwell took ninth in 13:08.3.

South Callaway freshman Daniel McDonald completed the top 10 by placing eighth in 13:06. Sophomore Austin Clubb came in 13th for the Bulldogs in 13:46.3.

Kingdom Christian Academy junior Zeke Barnett finished 22nd in 15:00.

Other top-10 finishers for the Fulton girls included junior Katie Lowry, fifth in 16:15.8, and sophomore Adrea Shadbolt - sixth in 16:23.8. Sophomore Olivia Rice was 11th in 17:05.3.

Senior Amanda McDonald took eighth for South Callaway in 16:35.3 and sophomore Elizabeth Luebbert finished 10th in 16:38.0.

New Bloomfield freshman Macy Puckett produced a third-place time of 16:10.6, while North Callaway sophomore Alyssa Rinehart was next in fourth in 16:12.1. Sophomore Brooke Fischer (16:34.0) and freshman Christa Gilmann (16:36.3) also finished seventh and ninth, respectively, for the Ladybirds.

KCA freshman Kaitlyn Phillips came in 17th in 22:58.0.

Fulton, North Callaway and KCA all compete in the Mexico Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday. New Bloomfield (8:30 a.m., at New Haven Invitational) and South Callaway (9 a.m., at Jefferson City) both don't run again until Saturday, Sept. 5.
