Perfect game victimizes William Woods in dropping their regular-season finale

David Mullins flustered the No. 25 Owls, tossing a perfect game to direct the Spartans to a 10-0, seven-inning American Midwest Conference rout to close the regular season Saturday.

Mullins struck out seven in snapping a 10-game winning streak for William Woods University (35-10, 19-7 AMC).

Missouri Baptist University (35-10, 17-9) scored once in the bottom of the first, then followed with a five-run second. The Spartans concluded their scoring with four runs in the fourth.

Junior starter Kyle Marburger was tagged with the loss for the Owls. Marburger (2-2) allowed five earned runs on five hits in just 1 2/3 innings, struck out one and walked none.

William Woods swept the Spartans in Friday's doubleheader to open the series. The Owls edged Missouri Baptist 3-2 in the first game and won the nightcap 4-2.

William Woods plated the go-ahead runs in the top of the sixth inning in the opener. Senior second baseman Javier Ledesma singled home senior center fielder Cody Stewart with one out to tie the game at 2-all, while junior first baseman Jordan Dey's sacrifice fly to right drove in freshman pinch-runner Travis Simonin for the winning run.

Stewart finished 3-for-4 and scored twice, while Ledesma was 1-for-3 as the Owls were out-hit 8-6.

Junior starter John Cavness allowed two earned runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings to post the win. Cavness (7-1) struck out two and walked one. Senior James Ball struck out three in 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief to pick up the save.

William Woods got out-hit by the Spartans 7-6 in the second game, but prevailed again. Dey reached on a fielder's choice in the fifth to score senior shortstop Stephen Kohler and square the game at 1-all. The Owls took the lead in the sixth when senior designated hitter Dustin Kremer grounded into a double play to drive in junior left fielder Larry Price from third.

Senior third baseman Austin Clapp's two-out, RBI single in the seventh increased William Woods' advantage to 3-1. The Owls wrapped up their scoring when sophomore pinch-runner Alex St. Pierre raced home on a passed ball in the eighth.

Kohler collected a double as both he and Ledesma finished 1-for-3. Clapp, Stewart, Kremer and junior catcher Grant Garrett were each 1-for-4.

Senior Ryan Yuengel notched the win with 2 2/3 hitless innings to remain undefeated at 7-0. Yuengel gave up an earned run, struck out four and walked one.

Ball struck out one and walked one in 1 2/3 innings to tally his ninth save.

The Owls now waits to find out who they will play in the first round of the AMC postseason tournament, scheduled to begin Thursday.
