North Callaway bows to state-ranked Mexico

The state-ranked Bulldogs went in front to stay behind a six-run outburst in the top of the fourth inning to stop the Thunderbirds' three-game winning streak 13-2 Friday night.

Mexico (11-4) - ranked No. 9 in Class 4 by the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association - took a 1-0 lead in the first, but North Callaway tied the game in its half of the inning on sophomore catcher Wyatt Branson's solo home run. Senior left fielder Cole Branson's RBI single in the second put the Thunderbirds on top 2-1.

After taking a 7-2 lead in the fourth, the Bulldogs pulled away by adding four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Senior center fielder Brandon Hagedorn also had a double in the third and senior first baseman Michael Early contributed a single in the sixth as North Callaway managed only four hits.

Junior starter Evan Aylward surrendered seven earned runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings to suffer the loss for the Thunderbirds. Aylward (0-2) struck out three and walked three, but also hit five batters.

"Evan pitched well through the first three innings, he just had a rocky fourth," North Callaway head coach Kevin O'Neal said. "We had a couple of very hard hits, but we also had some hard hits that Mexico fielded."

The Thunderbirds (6-5) won the junior varsity contest 5-1.

North Callaway hosts South Callaway at 5 p.m. Monday.
