Bulldogs ride Peneston three-hitter, 12-hit outburst in rout of Hermann

Sophomore starter Graysan Peneston threw a three-hitter and was one of three South Callaway players to drive in two runs as the Bulldogs throttled Hermann 11-1 in five innings Tuesday night.

South Callaway (11-1) erupted for three runs apiece in the first and second innings, then piled on five more in the fourth. Hermann put up its lone run in the top of the fourth.

Peneston was on target, striking out five and issuing just one walk to produce the complete-game win. Of Peneston's 74 pitches, 46 went for strikes.

"That was Graysan's longest outing so far this season, so we were anxious to see a longer stint from him," Bulldogs head coach Heath Lepper said. "He continued to throw well as the game went on and had pretty good velocity.

"He kept command of all four of his pitches. That was good to see."

South Callaway buoyed Peneston's performance on the mound with a 12-hit rampage at the plate. Junior catcher Cameron Richardson finished 3-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored, while senior center fielder Cory Hanger went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.

Peneston was also 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and scored once, while senior shortstop Dax Helsel finished 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and three steals. Senior first baseman Harold Woods went 1-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

"What I liked seeing is that we got contributions up and down the lineup, whether it was offensively or defensively," Lepper said. "We're capable of putting nine guys in the lineup with a good plate approach."

The Bulldogs travel to Columbia to face Father Tolton at 5 p.m. Thursday.
