New Bloomfield edges past California to win own tourney title

The third-seeded Wildcats logged single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to complete a 5-4 comeback victory over the No. 4 Pintos in the championship game of the the New Bloomfield-Calvary Lutheran Tournament on Saturday.

Junior Tyler Fennewald's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth plated the winning run and lifted the Wildcats (4-6) to their fourth win in a row.

"We were down and showed a lot of heart clawing back into it and eventually tying it and winning it in the eighth," New Bloomfield head coach Justin Forsythe said.

Junior Brady Wiler squared the game at 4-all for the Wildcats with an RBI single in New Bloomfield's half of the seventh.

Wiler was 3-for-4 and Fennewald finished 2-for-4 as the Wildcats were outhit 10-7.

Junior starter Clay Jensen struck out 10 and yielded four earned runs in the complete-game victory.

Wiler struck out seven and went the distance in New Bloomfield's 6-1 win over the No. 2 Belle Tigers in a semifinal game on Saturday.

Wiler gave up just three hits, walked two and gave up a lone earned run.

Senior left fielder Sam Niedergerke sparked the Wildcats, going 4-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a double. Jensen was 3-for-4 with an RBI, a double and two runs scored, while sophomore Zach Burton was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Junior catcher Derek Shikles was 1-for-2, drove in a run, scored once and drew two walks, while Wiler was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to wrap up New Bloomfield's 11-hit outing.

Fennewald had three hits and struck out eight batters in the Wildcats' 9-0 opening-round win over No. 6 Tuscumbia on Friday.

Fennewald threw six innings and walked one, while going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs at the plate. Burton also was 3-for-4 and scored a run, while Niedergerke and Shikles were each 2-for-4 with an RBI, a double and two runs scored.

Wiler finished 2-for-4 with a solo homer, two RBIs and a run scored as New Bloomfield had 12 hits.

"It was a good weekend for us," Forsythe said. "We played hard, we played great defense, we had pitching and we finally had timely hitting."

New Bloomfield hosts Show-Me Conference foe Eugene at 5 p.m. today.
