Lady Owls sweep Stephens to move over .500

The Lady Owls closed out their home schedule on a high note, moving back above .500 by toppling the Stars 9-1 in the backhalf of an American Midwest Conference doubleheader on Monday at Owls Field.

William Woods (23-22, 12-8 AMC) collected 12 hits to pick up its third straight win.

After Stephens plated a run in the top of the first, Lady Owls senior first baseman Kacey Scharnhorst slapped a two-run triple to deep right fielder to put William Woods on top in the bottom of that inning. She'd score on senior third baseman Caroline Sicht's sacrifice fly on the next at-bat to wrap up the Lady Owls' three-run frame.

Senior designated player Grace Fritz kicked off William Woods' four-run second with an RBI single to drive in senior catcher Macy Wierschem. Junior shortstop Shelby LeCuru's RBI single drove in Wierschem, while LeCuru scored with Scharnhorst on Sicht's double to right to close out the Lady Owls' inning.

William Woods finished its scoring with a pair of runs in the third.

Senior Julie Scheer tossed the first four innings to pick up the win for the Lady Owls. Scheer struck out three and allowed an unearned run on two hits, while walking one.

LeCuru paced William Woods, going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Scharnhorst was 2-for-3 with three driven in and a run scored, while Fritz went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Freshman starter Bre Logan pitched a three-hit shutout to guide the Lady Owls to a 3-0 victory in the opener. Logan struck out eight and walked three to prop up a William Woods offense that did all its scoring in the sixth inning.

After Scharnhorst's leadoff triple, she scored the game's first run on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Sicht. Fritz concluded the Lady Owls' scoring with a two-out, two-run double to left to drive in redshirt sophomore right fielder Brailee Schulte and sophomore pinch-hitter Beth Begemann.

Schulte was 2-for-2 with a run scored and left fielder Megan Cooper finished 2-for-3 as William Woods collected 10 hits.

William Woods plays an AMC doubleheader at Missouri Baptist today. Games will start at 3 and 5 p.m., respectively.
