Westminster claims SLIAC sweep over Blackburn

The Blue Jays pushed their winning streak to five games with a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep of the Beavers on Thursday at Saucier Field.

Westminster College (14-8, 9-4 SLIAC) edged Blackburn (Illinois) College 7-6 in the second game despite getting out-hit 14-10. Senior third baseman Tim Chambliss' three-run triple in the top of the seventh inning vaulted the Blue Jays to a 5-4 advantage.

Westminster topped off its scoring with two runs in the eighth.

Blackburn (7-20, 2-10) - ahead 4-2 through six innings - scored its final run in the ninth. Chambliss finished 2-for-5 with a double, while senior second baseman Cam Backes was 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored.

Junior left fielder Deion Hughes went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of doubles. Hughes moved to the mound in the ninth, striking out two and walking one to record the save.

Sophomore Jake Lund struck out seven in 2 2/3 innings to post his first win of the season. Lund (1-2) gave up two earned runs on three hits and issued a walk.

Junior third baseman Tyler Branneky drove in five runs and fell a triple short of the cycle as the Blue Jays prevailed 6-1 in the opener.

Branneky finished 3-for-5, scored a run and smacked a two-run home run in the first to start Westminster's scoring.

Freshman center fielder Nick Bohlmann slapped an RBI double in the seventh, then scored on Branneky's three-run double to cap off Westminster's four-run inning.

Backes, Chambliss, Hughes and Bohlmann all went 1-for-3 as the Blue Jays carried an 8-7 hitting edge.

Junior starter Collin Brinker - a North Callaway graduate - struck out six in six innings to collect the win. Brinker (2-2) surrendered an earned run on six hits and walked three.

Westminster opened its three-game, SLIAC series at Iowa Wesleyan College with a doubleheader Saturday. Results were not available at press time.

The two teams will play a single game at 1 p.m. today.
