Three WWU athletes pick up AMC weekly honors

Senior Lee Anna Sanders and freshman Madelyn Scrivner made it a clean sweep of the American Midwest Conference Female Athlete of the Week honors for the Lady Owls on Monday.

Sanders nabbed Track Athlete of the Week recognition after eclipsing the NAIA "A' standard in the half marathon last weekend at the St. Louis Marathon and Family Fitness Weekend recently. Sanders' time of 1 hour, 28 minutes and 52 seconds - the third fastest in her age group - allowed her to qualify for the marathon at next month's NAIA Outdoor National Championships.

Scrivner was tabbed as the AMC Field Athlete of the Week after placing third in the shot put at last weekend's Darrel Gourley Open with a toss of 11.9 meters.

Scrivner took sixth in both the discus (32.74) and the hammer throw (40.61) in being named Field Athlete of the Week for the fourth time overall and the second time during the outdoor season.

Senior Nick Zink garnered AMC Male Track Athlete of the Week accolades after qualifying for nationals in the 400-meter dash. Zink - now a five-time national qualifier - was the runner up at the Darrel Gourley Open, clocking a time of :48.46 to finish just inside the NAIA "B' Standard.

He also was a part of William Woods' fifth-place 1,600 relay team.

The Owls and Lady Owls begin competition in the University of Central Missouri Mule Relays today in Warrensburg.
