As a part of its annual training, Fulton firefighters have been practicing their vehicle extrication skills and learning tips and tricks to pull a passenger from a vehicle involved in an accident.

The B shift firefighters - Merit McLeod, Greg Luebbert, Kim Fitzsimmons, Shawn Wallendorff, Irving Garbison and Steven Knowles - took their turn on Wednesday at the Tennyson Fire Station. They practiced a strategy called tunneling.

In their scenario, the car rear ended a large vehicle like a bus or tractor trailer and they needed to create "tunnel" in order to remove a passenger from a front seat through the back. First, they broke open the truck and removed the truck door. Firefighters then cut out the back seat and driver's seat. Tom and Steve's Auto Repair and Wrecker Service, based in Fulton, donated vehicles for the training.
