Hornets come in second at Blair Oaks Invitational

Senior Sam Christensen won two events and senior Noah Given and sophomore Jared Eliuk supplied victories Saturday to direct the Fulton boys to a second-place team finish at the Blair Oaks Invitational.

In the girls' division, junior Madi Tobias took second place in the high jump as Fulton came in fifth overall.

The Hornets accumulated 160.5 points and the Lady Hornets tallied 48.5. School of the Osage captured the boys' team title, while host Blair Oaks wrapped up the girls' championship.

"We really paid a lot of attention to the team standings," Fulton head coach Jim Menderski said. "We're coming together as a team and not as individuals. It's exciting to see everyone moving in the same direction."

Christensen triumphed in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.09 seconds and prevailed in the high jump at 6 feet. He also joined junior Travis Dean, freshman Ammod Davis and Given in finishing third in the 400 relay in :46.7.

Given won the long jump with a distance of 19-11 and took third in the triple jump (36-7). Eliuk was victorious in the 400 with a time of :53.73.

The Hornets' 3,200 relay of sophomores Chaz Ballard and Brandon Dews and freshmen Cameron Peterson and Mason Gaines also delivered a first-place outcome in 9:23. The 800 relay of Dean, senior Greg Nevins, Eliuk and Given placed second in 1:36.13, while, the 1,600 relay of Davis, Nevins, Eliuk and sophomore Tanner Steffen was second in 3:48.

Davis also came in second in the 200 (:24.21) and third in the 100 (:12.18). Nevins took second in the 400 (:55.23), while Gaines finished second in the 3,200 (10:54).

Other third-place finishers for Fulton were Dean in the 200 (:24.24) and long jump (19-1), Steffen in the 300 hurdles (:45.98), senior Grant Gaines in the 1,600 (4:53), freshman Gabe Luebbert in the 3,200 (11:28), and senior Noah Braun in the pole vault (11-0).

Tobias took second in the high jump at 4-10, while the Lady Hornets' 3,200 relay of freshman Olivia Rice, sophomore Mary Hinchie and freshmen Sydney York and Stephanie Gilbert came in third in 13:03.

Fulton competes at the McCush Relays in Boonville at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
