Stewart's slam, eight RBIs fuel Owls' thrashing of Hannibal-LaGrange

Cody Stewart's mammoth display demolished Hannibal-LaGrange University.

William Woods' senior center fielder had four hits, including a grand slam, and knocked in eight runs Friday afternoon as the Owls hammered Hannibal-LaGrange 11-1 in an American Midwest Conference romp at Backer Sports Complex.

Stewart had an RBI single in the top of the first inning as William Woods (25-8, 12-5 AMC) put up two runs. He then delivered a two-run double during a four-run outburst in the second, following it up by ripping his grand slam to deep right on the first pitch he saw in the fifth.

Also supplying an RBI single in the seventh to wrap up the Owls' scoring, Stewart finished 4-for-5 and scored twice to spark William Woods' 14-hit rampage. Junior catcher Grant Garrett also went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while senior designated hitter Dustin Kremer was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Junior starter John Cavness - who gave up an earned run in the fifth - threw six strong innings to log the win for the Owls. Cavness (6-1) scattered seven hits, including six singles, struck out eight and walked none.

William Woods and Hannibal-LaGrange (14-21, 7-12) concluded their series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. Results were not available at press time.
