Westminster swept by Webster in SLIAC twinbill

The Blue Jays' losing streak stretched to a season-high four games after dropping a SLIAC doubleheader to the Gorlok on Saturday at Saucier Field.

Westminster (9-8, 4-4 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) collected just four hits in a 5-0 nine-inning shutout loss to close out the doubleheader.

The Blue Jays - who bowed 10-0 to Webster in the series opener - were blanked for a second time in three games after not being shut out in any of their first 15 games.

Webster (15-8, 5-3 SLIAC) pulled in front with two runs in the top of the second inning, then closed out the scoring with three in the eighth.

Westminster senior second baseman Cam Backes finished 1-for-3 with a double, while junior outfielder Deion Hughes was also 1-for-3. Senior first baseman Tim Chambliss and sophomore designated hitter Connor Hager both went 1-for-4.

Junior Collin Brinker (North Callaway) threw two innings to take the loss. Brinker (1-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on just one hit, walked one and struck out one.

The Blue Jays went scoreless over the final five innings to open the twinbill with a 5-4 loss. Hughes singled in a run, while Chambliss and junior third baseman Tyler Branneky each hit an RBI double in Westminster's three-run first.

Hager's RBI base hit in the second broke a 3-all tie, but would be the last of the Blue Jays' scoring output for the day. The Gorlok - who outhit the Blue Jays 10-7 - posted single runs in the sixth and seventh inning to secure the win.

Chambliss finished 1-for-2, while Backes, Hager, Hughes, Tyler Branneky, sophomore right fielder Tanner Branneky and freshman shortstop Adam Mundle all were 1-for-3.

Hughes threw 2 2/3 innings of relief to take his first loss of the year. Hughes (4-1) gave up two runs on four hits, walked one and struck out two.

Westminster will try to snap its skid with a SLIAC doubleheader at Principia (Ill.) College today. Games will start at 5 and 7 p.m., respectively.
