Hornets win team title, Bulldogs finish in fourth at Fayette Relays

Top-five finishes across the board, not surprisingly, led to corresponding team finishes for the Fulton and South Callaway boys' track teams at the Fayette Relays.

The Hornets (112.5 points) secured the varsity boys' team title, while the Bulldogs (86) claimed fourth place at Thursday's event held at Central Methodist University.

South Callaway (89.5) and Fulton (34.5) finished fourth and eighth, respectively, in the varsity girls' team standings.

"It's really exciting that we're off to this great start," Hornets head coach Jim Menderski said. "We had a number of kids match or beat their previous best marks.

"If they can continue to improve as the season wears on, it should be really exciting from a team and individual perspective."

Senior Sam Christensen supplied Fulton with one of its lone first-place finishes, winning the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.8 seconds. Fulton sophomore Tanner Steffen followed up in third place in :18.19 and took second in the 300 hurdles with a finish of :45.54.

Hornets senior Noah Given - competing in his first varsity track meet - won the boys' long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 5 inches. Junior Travis Dean was third in 20-2 1/2.

"Noah is a senior out for the first time this year and we always thought he'd be a really good track athlete and he came out and put up a really huge number," Menderski said.

Seniors Mason Shoemaker, Cory Hanger, Dylan Hare and junior Brandon Ward won the 400 relay for the Bulldogs in a time of :45.32, while Fulton's foursome of Christensen, Given, freshman Ammod Davis and junior Travis Dean placed third in :46.49.
