Westminster bats beat up Grinnell in doubleheader sweep

The Lady Blue Jays' winning streak stretched to four games on the strength of some hot hitting.

Westminster College swept the Grinnell (Iowa) College Pioneers by scores of 9-5 and 10-8 in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday.

The Lady Blue Jays (8-11) kicked off the nightcap with four-run showings in the top half of the first two innings. The Pioneers scored once in the second and drew to within 8-5 with four in the third.

Westminster finished with two runs in the fourth, while Grinnell posted three runs in the seventh before being closed out.

Freshman center fielder Amber Tepen was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored as the Lady Blue Jays tallied 10 hits. Freshman left fielder Kim Morrison was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore second baseman Kelsi Hill went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.

Sophomore Alyson Hahn pitched four innings to pick up the win. Hahn (6-4) gave up three runs on five hits, walked one and struck out five.

Freshman first baseman Abby Bartley (South Callaway) drove in four RBIs to power the Lady Blue Jays to victory in the opener.

Bartley finished 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI as Westminster was outhit 15-13.

The Lady Blue Jays scored in 5-of-7 innings, notching three in the first, two each in the second and third and one each in the fifth and sixth.

Tepen also went 3-for-4, driving in two RBIs, scoring two runs slapping two doubles. Morrison finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Hill went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Hahn garnered the complete-game win, allowing five earned runs on 15 hits and striking out two.

Westminster returns home for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Webster University on Monday. Games begin at 5 and 7 p.m., respectively.
