William Woods, MidAmerica Nazarene split twinbill

Freshman starter Bre Logan threw a four-hitter in the nightcap and junior shortstop Shelby LeCuru doubled twice and drove in a run as the Lady Owls used a 5-1 victory split Tuesday's doubleheader with the Lady Pioneers.

Hayley Gately's three-run home run punctuated MidAmerica Nazarene University's four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning in the first game to spark the Lady Pioneers' 5-2 win.

The split allowed William Woods University to climb above the .500 mark at 15-14 overall, while MidAmerica Nazarene is now 10-21.

Logan - who lost her shutout in the second game when she gave up an earned run in the seventh - struck out three and walked two in recording the victory.

The Lady Owls raced out to a fast lead by scoring three runs in the first and adding single runs in the second and seventh. William Woods ended up with nine hits and benefitted from the Lady Pioneers' three errors.

LeCuru was 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the first, while junior left fielder Sydnae Hatton also went 2-for-3 for the Lady Owls and scored a pair of runs. Senior first baseman Kacey Scharnhorst finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Senior second baseman Sam Parsons was 1-for-3 and scored once, while junior designated player Emily Murphy went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

In the opener, William Woods manufactured both of its runs in the top of the first. Sophomore center fielder Hannah Campbell and Hatton led off the game with consecutive singles, and Scharnhorst followed with a triple to deep left that scored both runners.

The Lady Owls maintained their 2-0 lead until MidAmerica Nazarene put up a run in the bottom of the fifth. After the Lady Pioneers tallied the game-tying run on a William Woods error in the sixth, Gately crushed the first pitch she saw from Lady Owls freshman starter Allison Waskow for a three-run shot to right.

Parsons went 2-for-3 with two doubles as William Woods collected eight hits. Campbell also finished 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, while Scharnhorst finished 1-for-4.

Sophomore right fielder Beth Begemann went 1-for-2 with a double and Hatton was 1-for-3.

Waskow - hurt by the Lady Owls' three errors - allowed five runs, only one earned, on nine hits in being tagged with the complete-game loss. She struck out three and walked one.

William Woods returns to the Kansas City area for an American Midwest Conference doubleheader at Park University at 2 p.m. Friday.
