Westminster outlasts UMAC foe MacMurray

Freshman running back Latif Adams produced the go-ahead touchdown and rushed 20 times for a game-high 98 yards in the Blue Jays' 27-21 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference triumph over the Highlanders on Saturday at Freesen Field.

Adams' 2-yard score - his second touchdown of the game - pushed Westminster to a 21-14 advantage with 8 minutes, 33 seconds left in the third quarter.

Westminster (2-1, 2-0 UMAC) outgained MacMurray in total yardage 370-348.

The Highlanders (1-2, 1-1) struck first on a 27-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Coy Dorothy to junior wide receiver Jorian Clemons with 9:18 left in the first.

Blue Jays senior quarterback Joe Plassmeyer tied the game at 7-all on a 1-yard run with 11:04 remaining in the second. A 5-yard rushing score by Adams with 3:10 remaining in the half gave Westminster its first lead of the game at 14-7.

MacMurray went 80 yards in just three plays on its ensuing drive, tying the game on a 9-yard touchdown run by junior running back Patrick Hall with 2:13 to go in the half.

The Blue Jays capped off their scoring on freshman running back Brendan Davis' 3-yard touchdown with 1:03 to go in the third.

Clemons hauled in a 63-yard scoring toss from Dorothy with 6:55 left for the Highlanders' final score.

Plassmeyer finished 26-of-42 passing for 248 yards and an interception, while junior wide receiver CJ Vaughan caught a game-high eight passes for 74 yards.

Clemons led all players with 136 receiving yards on five grabs.

Westminster returns home for a UMAC contest against the College of St. Scholastica this week. The Saints (2-0, 3-0) topped league foe Crown 48-14 at home on Saturday.
