Big fourth inning helps Ladybirds blank Lady Hornets

Junior left fielder Karlie Popp finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, two steals and a run scored in North Callaway's 6-0 triumph over Fulton on Monday at the high school athletic complex.

Junior center fielder Petri Eckert's one-out, RBI single in the top of the fourth inning broke a scoreless tie and proved to be the winning run. The Ladybirds (10-2) added three more in that frame then a run apiece in the sixth and seventh.

Senior Danielle Cassidy fanned 14 batters in the complete-game victory. Cassidy allowed three hits and walked two batters.

Cassidy went 3-for-4 from the plate and senior catcher Kaysey Huddleston was 2-for-4 as North Callaway collected 10 hits.

The Lady Hornets were led at the plate by senior center fielder Haylee Ebersole, who finished 2-for-3.

Senior pitcher Brooke Baysinger was 1-for-3 from the dish and threw five complete innings to take the loss. Baysinger allowed five runs - four earned - on six hits and one walk while striking out seven. Fulton (3-12) committed four errors.

The Ladybirds earned the win in the JV game 9-2. North Callaway raises its record to 7-1, while the Lady Hornets fall to 1-6.

Fulton - the No. 8 seed in the AA Softball tournament - collected nine hits in dismantling No. 7 Russellville 17-2 in consolation bracket play on Saturday.

Freshman Kendalyn Roesner struck out three in five innings for the win. She allowed an earned run on four hits and walked one. Senior Dacrie Depping was 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Roesner was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Freshman Emma Abbott went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, freshman Samantha Weber was 1-for-3 with a run scored and Baysinger finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Baysinger struck out 10 in six innings in the Lady Hornets' 4-3 loss to No. 5 Versailles on Saturday. Baysinger surrendered four runs - two earned - and scattered five hits, while walking three.

Depping finished 2-for-4, Roesner was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Abbott went 2-for-3. Weber and junior Baileigh Horstmeier both were 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Fulton started tournament play with a 15-1 loss to top-seeded Southern Boone on Friday. Baysinger struck out three in two innings to take the defeat. She gave up six earned runs on six hits, walked three and had one of the Lady Hornets' two hits.

Roesner relieved her for the final two innings registering one strikeout. She allowed nine runs - six earned - five hits and four walks.

Fulton hosts North Central Missouri Conference foe Kirksville at 5 p.m. tonight. The Ladybirds play a varsity-only Eastern Missouri Conference game at Community R-6 at 5 p.m. tonight.
