New Bloomfield stymies St. Elizabeth

Junior third baseman Tyler Fennewald had four hits and drove in three runs Tuesday night as the Wildcats easily handled the Hornets in six innings.

Fennewald went 4-for-4 with a double as New Bloomfield (4-1) piled up 16 hits. Senior center fielder Tucker Lane also finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and senior catcher Sam Niedergerke was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Junior starter Derek Shikles threw a complete game to log the victory for the Wildcats. Shikles surrendered two earned runs on eight hits, struck out seven and walked one.

New Bloomfield (0-2) bowed in the junior varsity game 2-0 in three innings.

On Saturday in Eugene, junior Clay Jensen struck out six as New Bloomfield blasted Tuscumbia 15-2 in the third-place game of the AA Tournament on Saturday in Eugene.

Jensen threw four innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits and walked one.

Sophomore right fielder Zac Burton finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in to guide New Bloomfield's 10-hit attack. Fennewald was 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Niedergerke - playing second base - and junior shortstop Grant Nichols were both 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

New Bloomfield (3-1) suffered its first loss in a 15-0, five-inning romp by Dixon in semifinal play earlier Saturday. Fennewald - the Wildcats' starter - didn't make it out of the first inning, while Jensen and Shikles, playing catcher, had both of New Bloomfield's hits.

Fennewald drove in three runs and senior starter Brady Wiler threw a complete game as the Wildcats opened tournament play with a 10-2 win over Vienna last Friday.

Wiler struck out seven and gave up two earned runs on five hits and issued a walk.

Fennewald was 2-for-4 as New Bloomfield totalled 11 hits, while Lane - playing center field - finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. Shikles went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Nichols was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

New Bloomfield plays its home opener against Eugene at 5 p.m. Thursday.
