Hornets' Gaines earns medal at Linn invite

Fulton senior Grant Gaines garnered 16th place and was the Hornets' highest finisher at the 36th-annual Linn Invitational on Saturday.

Gaines posted a time of 18 minutes, 33 seconds to lead Fulton to a 13th-place finish out of 18 teams in the varsity division.

Sophomore Chaz Ballard earned 50th place in 19:51, senior Ian Shoemaker took 91st in 21:26 and sophomore Brenden Dungan finished 100th in 21:54. Juniors John Burch (23:25) and Aaron Hickman (24:28) finished 120th and 133rd, respectively to round out the Hornets' competitors.

Junior Rachel Quick paced the Fulton girls with a 35th-place result of 24:24. Senior Megan Coleman finished 59th in in 25:45, freshman Adrea Shadbolt earned 63rd in 25:59 and sophomore Mary Hinchie came in 89th in 28:10. Freshman Sydney York was the final Lady Hornet finisher, placing 108th in 37:39 as Fulton finished 10th as a team.

The Fulton boys finished second out of nine teams in the junior varsity division, highlighted by four medal winners. Freshman Mason Gaines finished in first place, setting a personal and course record of 18:52. Freshman Nathan Quick took third with a personal-best time of 19:54 and freshman Gabe Luebbert took 10th in 20:41, also a personal high.

Freshman Haydon Windsor clocked a personal best of his own, finishing 11th in a time of 20:43, freshman Tyler Hickerson took 54th in 24:26 and sophomore Caine Breedlove earned 64th place in 26:58.

Both teams will run at their own 29th-annual Fulton Invitational at 10 a.m. this Saturday.
