William Woods defeats Central Methodist, stays unbeaten

The Owls' undefeated start continued Wednesday night with their first win over the Eagles since 2009 by a score of 3-1.

The match was originally scheduled to be played Tuesday night, but was postponed because of lightning.

Junior midfielder Alex Severino gave William Woods University (5-0-1) the early lead with a goal in the 8th minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder Brett Hodges. Senior midfielder Paulo Conelian then scored on a free kick from 23 yards out in the 10th minute and the Owls eventually carried the 2-0 edge into halftime.

Senior midfielder Sebastian Burich converted an unassisted goal in the 77th minute to close out William Woods' scoring. Tyler Nies tallied Central Methodist University's only goal in the 86th minute on an assist from Daniel Arrazola.

Owls freshman goalkeeper Conor Cable finished with four saves as both teams totaled 14 shots. Cable was named the NAIA national defensive player of the week Tuesday and received the same honors from the American Midwest Conference on Monday.

William Woods begins AMC play at Lyon (Arkansas) College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
