Ladybirds break out in fifth, rip Elsberry in 10-0 EMO win

The North Callaway Ladybirds sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning and scored nine runs in a 10-0 Eastern Missouri Conference victory over Elsberry on Thursday night.

North Callaway (5-1, 3-0) collected 12 hits in easily subduing Elsberry (0-5, 0-4), the defending EMO champion.

Junior third baseman Shannon Haley broke a scoreless tie for the Ladybirds in the fourth with an RBI single to plate freshman second baseman Megan Talley.

Junior left fielder Karlie Popp's two-run triple highlighted North Callaway's fifth-inning outburst and was commended by head coach Brandi Thomsen for having "three really good at-bats."

Senior shortstop Elaine Brinker batted twice in the fifth, delivering a two-run single and RBI single, while Haley, senior catcher Kaysey Huddleston and junior pitcher Madison Ausfahl also produced RBI singles.

Brinker finished 3-for-3 with a sacrifice and a run scored, Haley was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while junior first baseman Taylor Wiseman went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Ausfahl (3-0) struck out eight in completing the shutout. She allowed two hits and two walks.

"Maddie Ausfahl pitched a super game," Thomsen said.

The Ladybirds will finish an EMO contest at home against Wright City at 5 p.m. today. The game - which was rained out Sept. 5 and suspended by rain on Tuesday - will begin in the top of the third with North Callaway ahead 2-0.
