New Bloomfield roll past Russellville for SMC win

Freshman shortstop Madi Craighead was a home run short of the cycle in the Lady Wildcats' 16-6 five-inning Show-Me Conference win over the Lady Indians on Thursday.

Craighead went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and three runs batted in as New Bloomfield (4-1, 2-0 SMC) won its fourth straight game.

Down by four runs heading into the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Wildcats used a five-run outburst to grab the lead. Senior left fielder Keaira Ruppel produced an RBI single with one out to draw New Bloomfield within 5-2. A two-out, two-run double by Craighead made it a one-run game, senior second baseman Kennedy Pieter tied it at 5-all with an RBI single and scored on an RBI double by senior center fielder Mykaela Bonnett.

New Bloomfield then plated two runs apiece in the third and fourth, and ended the game with six runs in the fifth. Russellville added its final tally in the fourth.

Bonnett finished 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs. Sophomore third baseman Kate Baxter was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and senior designated player Megan Jenkins finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Sophomore starter Madison Love went the distance for the win. Love struck out eight, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and three walks.

New Bloomfield posted an 8-0 win in three innings of junior varsity play.

The Lady Wildcats host Wellsville in SMC play at 5 p.m. Monday.
