Jumps in attendance, graduation rate help Fulton improve APR performance

Fulton saw a marked improvement in its Annual Performance Report, jumping 11 points to earn 121 of 140 possible points - 86.4 percent - for MSIP 5 standards.

The district saw its biggest jumps in the standards for attendance and graduation rate.

Fulton went from 6 (out of 10) points in attendance for 2013 to 9.5 for 2014; and from 24 points (out of 30) in 2013 to 30 for 2014.

"We knew that the (standard of) 90 percent of students attending 90 percent of the time would be a difficult challenge, so to see improvement in attendance was great - we know that will lead to improved student performance," Assistant Superintendent Suzanne Hull said, noting district leaders were also pleased to receive all of the available points for graduation rate. "Our five-year grade was 83.1 percent, and that's up from 76.6 percent."

The district saw a small gain in the academic achievement standard as well, going from 46 points (of a possible 56) in 2013 to 48 points for 2014. Performance in subgroup achievement stayed steady at 8 out of 14 points, and college and career readiness dropped slightly from 26 to 25.5 points of a possible 30.

Looking at academic achievement - which is calculated using three years' worth of MAP data - Hull said the district needs to continue to focus on subgroup improvement and some of the specific subject areas - including high school math.

"To have 85.7 percent of our academic achievement (points) is positive, but we would like to to be over 90 percent," she said.

Hull will give an in-depth report on the district's APR and 2014 MAP scores during the Sept. 10 school board meeting.

The school board will meet at 7 p.m. in the high school library.
